The Ice Age Floods

The Tri-Cities region was shaped by a series of massive floods at the end of the last Ice Age, known as the Missoula Floods or Ice Age Floods. Over 13,000 years ago, ice dams repeatedly burst, releasing torrents of water that carved deep channels, eroded rock formations, and reshaped the Columbia Basin. These floods left behind the striking landscapes seen today, including the Channeled Scablands, the Columbia River Gorge, and the towering White Bluffs.

The region is part of the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail, a designated route highlighting key sites across the Pacific Northwest that showcase the power of these ancient floods.
